What are the causes of vision problems?
The causes of vision problems are as follows:
– Cataracts
– Retinal disease
– Myopia
– Corneal disease
– Glaucoma
Why is vision screening important?
Vision screening is important because more than 50% of cases of blindness are caused by preventable and treatable causes.
More than 80% of people that face vision problems have preventable and treatable causes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that cataracts are the main cause of vision problems and as the population ages, blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration also increases significantly.
What will happen if vision problems are not detected early through vision screening and not treated properly?
Perfect vision can provide information about our surroundings and environment. Therefore vision problems will affect basic life activities and result in dependency.
Problems with vision in one eye are related to safety and dependency issues. Patients will experience problems estimating depth, contrast sensitivity, glare and visual coordination as well as motor movement, which results in movement imbalance.
Vision problems in both eyes are likely to be related to dependency, psychosocial issues and interference with daily life activities.
Furthermore, most vision problems experienced by the elderly are not reported to health personnel. Therefore vision screening among the elderly is recommended.
